Clinical Depression: A Problem In Today's Modern World

Clinical depression is a condition often felt by many people who become unable to deal with the pressures felt to today's modern world. People suffering from chronic and acute depression become so sad and apathetic that it is often extremely difficult for then to even get out of bed in the morning. The depressed person reaches a state where even the simplest activity is performed with great difficulty. Severe depression can reach a state that a person suffering from this condition may even do himself bodily harm.

Depression has both physiological as well a sociological causes. It may be brought on by a physical illness, an emotional trauma or experience, use of various drugs and medications, alcohol abuse, or a combination of various factors.

Treatment for depression can entail a number of methods, including psychotherapy, exercise, change of diet, brain stimulation, and even meditation. The depressed person must be made to feel the value of self worth and should be helped to find a path on which to follow which will eventually lead to improvement. Light is often considered an excellent therapy method, as clinical studies have found the exposure to light – particularly sunlight, helps reduce 'blue feelings' which are a common symptom of depression.

People who have just experience a divorce or loss of a loved one often experience periods of anxiety and depression. Also, women who have just had a baby are often depressed after the baby is born; especially if they have to stay home and care for an infant while their husband is working.

Depression can affect a person's general health and overall wellbeing. It may cause a variety of imagined symptoms and illnesses which may actually become real if the state of depression is deep enough. Symptoms that coincide with depression include eating disorders, including over or compulsive eating, anorexic conditions, use of cigarettes, alcohol, and narcotics, and general anti-social behavior. And while these conditions are often in older people, it is especially sad to witness them in young people.

One of the most common symptoms is low self worth or self esteem, together with feelings of anxiety and fatigue. This can cause a person to feel that he or she has no self-worth or future as compared to others – especially peer groups. The more the feeling increases, the more difficult it becomes for a person to function in the 'real world'. Feelings of being unpopular is a major problem which often becomes felt at a person's work place as well as within the person's own family.

While medications involving anti-depressants such as citalopram or flouextine are often used, intense psychotherapy may also be required. In many northern countries, especially Scandinavia, employees are often given long winter holidays to enable them to go the places where there is more sunlight to alleviate feelings of depression brought on by long, dark winters.

Whatever the treatment used, the importance in dealing with symptoms of severe depression cannot be over emphasized, because if left untreated, the severely depressed person may even consider suicide as a way of escape.
