Tips On Improving Concentration

Many people have difficulty in concentration – either at the work place or in an academic environment. In the workplace, tasks in which a lot of detail work is require is often tiresome and frustrating to people who simply cannot concentrate on learning and working with a large amount of written material and other data. In an academic environment, especially on the university level, students are required to use a lot of concentration to absorb the large amounts of study materials given in lectures, textbooks, and other sources. One of the biggest problems that most of us have in these situations is to be in the right environment to be able to absorb the material by being able to better concentrate on it.

A recent study workshop made by Virginia Tech University, and designed to assist students who are having problems with concentrating on their studies gave some very helpful ideas toward achieving these goals. Some of these tips are noted here as follows:

  1. Learn main ideas, then details: It's always best to get the 'gist' of what you need to study or concentrate on, before going into learning the "fine print".
  2. Make the information relevant: one must be sure that the material being reviewed is what is needed, i.e. relevant to the goal that has been set.
  3. Use your body and your senses to learn information: Make sure you are in a learning environment that is comfortable as has as few distractions as possible. In this way, you can fully utilize all of your senses to the most advantage.
  4. Relax: Study or work concentration can only be possible if one is fully relaxed and free from stress.
  5. Use visualization: Try to visualize images or concepts of the material being studied, even if this involves imaginary examples to help you remember the material more easily.
  6. Overlearn the Material: Constant reviewing of the material will help to recall it later when needed. It should be remembered that the human brain can store material for life; it just needs to be recalled when needed, and "overlearning" can assist in accomplishing this.
  7. Have a positive attitude about learning: It is often said that a positive mental attitude (PMA) will work miracles; and this is very true in improving concentration.
  8. Use multiple learning techniques: Use a number of techniques, including visual and audio, to assist in improving concentration. Card files, scan reading, picking out key words in sentences, etc., can all be of assistance in improving concentration.
  9. Review the material regularly: As previously noted in tip number 6, regular review of material, will help your brain to recall it easier. The brain simply becomes more 'familiar' with the material being studied.
  10. Use "brainstorming" if you are unable to recall something: Brainstorming with study companions or friends, can help to absorb and recall material. By 'kicking around' the material and discussing it with others, it often helps people to absorb it within their own minds. This example is very true when studying or reviewing case studies.

Formulating strategies to help improve concentration can be made less difficult, and even pleasant, if one goes about them in a systematic and organized manner. Don't try to undergo too many learning strategies at once as it can make you even more confused in the end. It's better to pick out a few strategies that work best for you and use them on a regular basis. It might be surprising how well these ideas can work for you!
